Persons who suffer with dermatitis or sensitive skin have a difficult time living day to day avoiding allergens and the dreaded rash, itching and discomfort that comes with it. I have sensitive skin and prone to develop contact dermatitis at any time often reacting to something next to my skin that I have used for long periods of time. I recently had to discard my favorite pair of pants after months of developing a rash on my stomach and side whenever I wore them. How could this be I said to myself, of all the things in the world to have, why did I inherit this strange skin?

While researching the matter I came across some interesting information regarding contact dermatitis and clothing. It seems there are quite a few people who develop contact dermatitis from formaldehyde resins which are used for textile finishes. Apparently its pretty common in women but men can also develop the condition if they have sensitive skin. I was amazed and had no idea that formaldehyde was used on fabrics. Can you imagine being allergic to your clothes? If you are experiencing a chronic recurring rash on various part of your body, particularly where clothes fit tightly you may want to contact your Dermatologist and request testing for this sensitivity. The rash can get particularly irritated from perspiration and in areas where the friction of the fabric rubs against the skin.

According to the American Contact Dermatitis Society common eruption sites include the posterior neck, upper back, lateral thorax (part of the body between the head or neck and abdomen), waistband and flexor (fingers) surfaces. It can however appear in other areas like the forehead if you wear a cap that's been treated with formaldehyde.

Formaldehyde is used to make clothing that is wrinkle resistant (permanent press) and these can release significant amounts of the substance. The American Contact Dermatitis Society states that rayon, blended cotton, corduroy, wrinkle-resistant 100% cotton, and any synthetic blended polymer are likely to have been treated with formaldehyde resins. Women's clothing also includes lingerie and undergarments.

Many individuals are allergic to formaldehyde and know to avoid personal care products that contain formaldehyde releasing preservatives. Keep in mind that many pharmaceuticals including OTC drugs also use these same preservatives so it's not limited to skin care products. For those sensitive to formaldehyde clothing can also be a strong source of irritation.

Each country has its own manufacturing standards for acceptable levels for formaldehyde resins. A low indicator of formaldehyde releasing resin would be 75 ppm which is the Japanese standard, the US standard is somewhere near 300ppm, quite a difference.

Fabrics safe to wear:
100% silk, 100% linen (if it wrinkles easy), 100% polyester, 100% acrylic, 100% nylon, spandex, flannel (soft), wool (may cause irritation) and denim.

Do not wear these fabrics:
Permanent press, wrinkle resistant, color-fast, stain-resistant, blends (including rayon, polyester-cotton), corduroy or shrink-proof wool.

It is suggested that you read the labels in your existing clothing and separate them in your closet so you will know what's safe to wear. Always opt for loose fitting clothing since friction and perspiration can cause the condition to flare. Read the labels in any new clothing before you purchase. Clothes made in Japan are the safest and companies that sell clothes in Japan also have to meet the Japanese standard.

Companies that meet the Japanese standard:
GAP, Old Navy, Banana Republic, Liz Claiborne, Eddie Bauer, Cuddle Duds and Levi Strauss. There may be others but these were on the list from the American Contact Dermatitis Society.

While women get to read loads of stuff of how to cope up with being a mom, Ive never come across any comprehensive guidebook for Dads. They watch their wives going through the pain helplessly, and wait patiently for the little miracle to come in the world and change their world forever. Whoever says Mothers are the only ones close to the children. A Father is the first love of his daughter and the first best friend of his son. Just like you cant substitute the love of a Mother, Fathers too are irreplaceable.

What is a Father to the Child

1] Fathers are the Bible of the world

He is the one who tells you the ugly truth of the world. Without his guidance, we would still be living in our dreamland of happiness and thinking everything and everyone out there will make us happy. We unknowingly learn from his everyday struggle. I learned how to use money, respect, patience, tolerance, forgiveness and even anger in the real world through him.

2] Fathers are always there

Every time he held my hand in the crowd, I knew he will save me from everything, and that I can peacefully eat my candy. Even when I grew up and it was time to face the world, I stepped out with the confidence of him watching my back, always.

3] Fathers teach how to struggle and never give up

Watching dad throughout our childhood we learn how to make our way in the mad race. Isnt it? He never comes home and gives us a lecture of how to make a living, but we learn it from his face that looks like a warrior tired after a war. We may hear him cribbing or even hating his work, but still everyday he gets up kiss us and goes back for his struggle, only to give us a life of happiness.

4] Fathers teach to eat with family

There were times when I had friends to catch up, favorite shows to watch and went through the infamous- leave me alone teenage phase. Whatever the reason may be, it all became null and void when Daddy called at the dinner table. This simple habit taught me the importance of coming back to the family no matter where on world were you the whole day. That has always been my favorite time of the day.

5] Fathers teach the difference between want and need

Remember when we really wanted something and thought we just cant live without it, and dad who always says yes to everything suddenly said NO! It took time to realize but he knew as inexperienced children we cannot differentiate between want and needs, so for us, he did that job, always.

6] Fathers have many faces- Teacher, Disciplinarian and even Clown

If fathers can draw a line, they are the ones who override orders (mommies) and lets you live too. He helps you with your homework at night and even draws your diagrams just to ensure you dont get scolded in school. Every time I made a mistake, its dad who I feared the most. Father is the disciplinarian who brings back our conscience and teaches us how to apologize and helps us correct our mistakes. At times when no one understands you and laughs at you at your funny paper boat, he is the one who claps and applauds your creation. He is the one who plays with you only to lose always, so that you can feel like a winner.

7] Fathers are the pillars of strength- They dont cry

Every father knows, in the childs eyes his father is the hero. A hero who protects, fights for us, brings gifts, laughs and plays with them and still never gets tired. A father is the shoulder to cry on and get strength for the entire family. He knows it is important for him to be the hero so that the child can get the strength to keep fighting and never give up. That is why, fathers dont cry- even if they want to.

8] Fathers teach you to love your family

No matter how much he wanted to go for his office party, he stayed back to help me with my exam preparations. He came back tired from office wanted to watch a movie but instead calmed me down by putting my favorite channel. Never for once did he complain why he should come to wonderland when what he really wanted was to sleep and rest at home.

The endless sacrifices that a father makes to ensure his family is happy makes you wonder what we would do without him. As much as we love our mother, our father completes our personality and makes us a better person. Happy Fathers Day, Dad!

As golf continues to remain popular, even during the current weak economy, many golfers recognize that to have the ability to improve their game, they should turn to fitness. As a result, a whole new industry, golf fitness, has been born. We can probably thank Tiger Woods for this trend, since he is the first golfer to truly train like a professional athlete. What does that mean for the average golfer? Well, if you have played another sport in the past, chances are you have some knowledge about weight training, cardio training, stretching, etc. Former athletes, particularly those in sports where a fit and lean body, but not necessarily a muscular body is warranted, have a head start on the average golfer. They already possess strong legs, core muscles, shoulders and arms, and likely have decent flexibility.

On the other hand, there are many golfers out there who have never trained their bodies to any extent, and this often shows up during golf lessons. Students who do not have strength in any of the areas above have a great deal of difficulty with the rotation and balance that are required in the golf swing. Some athletic types struggle as well, particularly those who have done little stretching over time.

So what are the best golf exercises? It is necessary to combine a strength training routine with a flexibility training routine. Flexibility is somewhat more important in that it will allow the golfer to create a bigger shoulder turn and maintain posture. Strength training is important where the core muscles, legs and shoulders may be a little weak.

When it comes to flexibility training, golfers should focus much attention to exercises that stretch the hamstrings, glutes, hip muscles, lower back and shoulders. For golfers who have limited flexibility, stretching the body three times per week for a good 30 to 45 minutes is recommended.

For strength training, heavy weight training is not recommended, but rather exercises that utilize body weight are more suited to golfers. Different styles of push-ups, including plyometric push-ups are an important component of this type of strength training. Push-ups of different varieties can work the forearms, triceps, shoulders, chest and upper back.

Pull-ups are another great exercise, but most people, particularly since many are over weight, really struggle with these. However, training bands are a decent substitute for the pull-up bar or lat machines at the gym. These exercises help to strengthen the forearms, biceps, lats and upper back.

For the legs, wall squats and a variety of plyometric type of low impact jumping exercises that utilize squats are terrific exercises. Martial arts stance training exercises are also good, particularly for people with bad ankles and knees who need to avoid any kind of impact training.

Last but not least are the core exercises. These are the muscles between the chest and the upper legs such as the abdominals, lower back, hip flexors and obliques. This muscles are very important for allowing the body to maintain good balance and generating an extra bit of power. Rather than just doing normal crunches, it is recommended that exercises involving at least a couple different muscle groups are performed in one exercise. Abdominal exercises where the feet are off the floor and legs are extended at some point are terrific exercises for the core.

To really excel at golf it is a good idea to incorporate a solid fitness routine. This will also help the golfer continue to play at a higher level later in life. The beauty of the exercises that can really help a golfer achieve these goals is that they can all be performed at home with limited equipment. It's never too late to get started!

It has long been known that a happy marriage is a recipe for health. In a study of more than 4000 seniors age 55 or older, both men and women who were living with spouses consumed a better diet than those living alone. There is no doubt that emotional bonding and meaningful connectedness have a direct influence on health. These connections are often the source of positive feelings and a sense that all is right, despite challenging circumstances. In a 15 year study of close to 700 nuns who lived and taught in the United States, researchers found that those who most often used words such as "joy" or " happy" in their letters and diaries lived as much as ten years longer than those who expressed fewer positive emotions.

Positive feelings that come from being part of a partnership or group can act as a biological shield against stress. A Dutch study of 1000 people aged 65 to 85 found that 10 years later, the optimists in the group had a 55% lower risk of death from all causes and a 23% lower risk of heart disease.

What do all these studies mean for us? It does not hurt to make meals a happy sharing time. There were years when our boys were involved with music lessons, baseball, chess clubs and tennis and we could not find time to have meals together. But we made sure that Friday nights and Sunday dinners were sacrosanct and we kept those times as family dates.

Setting aside at least one day a week for family meals can do more than feed the body. For those who live alone, consider inviting a friend or neighbor over or joining a social group that meets for dinner twice a month. Even nurturing your sense of being connected with the spiritual universe is a strong antidote against stress. The sense that we are all interconnected is part of our emotional system and needs to be fed just as much as our bodies.

As a hardgainer, you should understand that your genetic capacity for muscle growth is not quite on the same level as those lucky, genetically gifted mesomorphs, who can put on muscle just by thinking about bench pressing! Okay maybe I'm exaggerating a little, but not too far from the truth.

You're going to have to train smarter, be more disciplined, and have the perseverance to overcome the genetic shortcoming of the ectomorph body type you've been endowed with.

If I'm losing you with all the ecto- meso- "morph" terminology, then this article should bring you up to speed.

Somatotypes and Body Type Classification

There are three basic somatotypes, or body types as proposed by Dr. William H. Sheldon back in the 1930's that are used to classify individuals based on their physical traits and characteristics. It is not a perfect classification system, because even though some people fit these descriptions exactly, others will be a mixture of two or more somatotypes (i.e. an ecto-mesomorph.) Never-the-less, it is a great starting point for determining your genetic traits, your capacity for building muscle, and designing a program that maximizes your body's potential.

Here are the three somatotypes:
Ectomorphic: characterized by long and thin muscles/limbs and low fat storage; usually referred to as slim.
Mesomorphic: characterized by large bones, solid torso, low fat levels, wide shoulders with a narrow waist.
Endomorphic: characterized by increased fat storage, a wide waist and a large bone structure.

The True Hardgainer

Most people that are considered to be true hardgainers fall into the ectomorphic category. Since this website is dedicated to helping ectomorphs realize their full genetic potential, we will be focusing our attention on this body type specifically.

As an ectomorph, your metabolism is in overdrive, meaning you are rather lean, and thin and experience difficulty in gaining weight of any kind (muscle or fat.) You most likely lack significant physical strength and this is obvious because you are also lacking in muscle mass. The extreme ectomorph has a fragile and delicate physique, with a lighter skeletal structure, small wrists and joints. The ectomorph may be slightly taller than the average person, and thus has longer limbs, which are not advantageous to moving heavy weights. After considering this, you may wonder if being an ectomorph really has any benefits. Are you doomed to being scrawny for the rest of your life? You may also wonder whether you should even bother trying to lift weights to begin with. Maybe you should just stick to endurance sports?

To quickly answer these questions I say Yes, No, Yes, and NO! Just because you do not have the genetic propensity to become a massive pro-bodybuilder does not mean you cannot pack on slabs of lean muscle mass to your body. You can, although it will require more work, focus, and desire.

In fact, lots of ectomorphs have gone on to make incredible transformations adding 20, 30, 50, even 100+ pounds to their smaller sized frames in a matter of months rather than years. This all depends on your intelligence as a lifter, your desire and passion to make this type of transformation, and your ability to master the principles of gaining mass.

The idea of a nationalized healthcare system has been around for a long time, and like most other social ideas, it sounds good when you first hear it. Healthcare for everyone in the United States would be a dream come true for lots of families but the problems with universal healthcare far outweigh the benefits. Many countries have tried this and failed because of some basic ideas that arent even being considered.

1. The Competition - or lack there of. One of the things that made this country great is the free market principle of competition. Doctors spend years in medical school to graduate and join the ranks of practicing MDs. When they do, they usually have huge debts to repay and big dreams of being successful, rich doctors. Competition creates winners and these doctors strive to be the best so they can make a name for themselves and ultimately make more money. In a universal healthcare system, the government decides what a doctor can charge and they all make the same amount. There is no longer a reason for a doctor to strive to be the best because there is no reward for doing so. This hinders medical advancement and makes everyone take the same sub-standard healthcare; it also greatly reduces the drive for people to become doctors at all. I understand that the need to help others should always come first, but that wont pay off years of student loans and put food on the table.

2. The Cost - somewhere in the neighborhood of $3 trillion per year. That makes the recent stimulus package from congress seem small by comparison. Large numbers like this tend to fall on deaf ears because no one really knows how much that is. To give you an idea, its $10,000 per year for every person living in this country. The reason healthcare costs have risen to where they are is because we have already begun moving toward socialized healthcare for several years now. It works like this: Medicare and Medicaid put about 20% of the country in a free healthcare program, but someone has to pay for it; so the other 80% see a rise in their healthcare costs. This causes more people from the 80% to lose their healthcare because they can no longer afford it and they join the other 20% who are getting it for free. Healthcare costs continue to rise for those who are paying for it as more and more people get it for free; but in the end, this money has to come from somewhere. The only way to fix this problem is to un-socialize the system and make healthcare affordable to more people. One company with a solution is Ameriplan. In this health program, doctors offer big discounts for all their services in exchange for payment from the patient... no insurance or big government to get in the way.

3. The Government - cant do anything efficiently. Every program that our government has taken over dies a slow death. They have ruined retirement with social security, and forced more people into poverty through welfare. This is the same group of people that pay $5,000 for a toilet seat. Most of the people on capital hill have never had to worry about healthcare and have no idea how it works. They are interested in your vote; and if universal healthcare sounds good to you, they will be happy to do it regardless of right or wrong. Good healthcare is not a right... its a privilege that should be worked for and cherished, not handed out.

I wish everyone could have the best healthcare but that is not the world we live in. We should endeavor to make it as affordable as possible for as many people as possible, but the more free it becomes, the worse it will get.

Generally speaking, long time holiday makes people have more time to do what they like to do. They can spend the holiday traveling, going shopping, visiting friends, families or if they like. They can take some courses they are interested in.

Anyway, more spare time gives people a better opportunity to enjoy life. On the other hand, lengthening certain holidays is also a good way to encourage spending. For me one of the main reasons it works is that I dont have any excuses anymore to not do it on a daily basis.

To start of you do two exercises (plank and wall sit) for up to 90 seconds, five days per week. That means a total of 15min pure workout time per week. Plus the rest time you will take in between the exercises.

Once you have mastered these two exercises and get bored there are additional exercises that will strengthen even more muscle groups in your body. You reduce the number of days to three and increase the number of exercises to six which makes for a total workout time of 27minutes per week. Still not enough to blame a lack of time for not doing it.

It is a perfect answer to our overstressed society that claims never to have enough time for health and fitness. And even better the only piece of equipment you need is a chin-up bar. Easy.

It is one of the best low cost training routines I have come across in a long time. You can start immediately, can do it anywhere without taking special equipment with you and you can increase your exercise load with increased strength according to your personal strength.

Also it gives you very lean muscles, you dont get bulky or look fat but you get a nicely toned, slim body with lots of strength. Exactly what I am looking for.

It is a perfect full-body workout where you can measure your success straight away with every second more you are able to hold the position you know that your strength has increased again.

Alternate both your knees and elbows with every rep, allowing both halves of your body to experience this exercise. For maximum effect do between 20 and 30 reps per set.

2. Planks.

Planks are simple to learn, but difficult to master. They are also great for building a strong core and chiseled abs. To do a plank get into the standard pushup position. Keep your elbows under your shoulders and bent at 90 degrees. Place your body weight on your forearms. Keep your torso suspended in the air and held in a straight line for as long as you can. Each set should ideally be about two to three minutes, but many inexperienced plankers will not be able to hold the position for that long.

3. Pullups.

Pullups are a classic exercise that can help to build a six pack. To do them simply find a pull-up bar and grip it a little bit wider than your shoulder width. Keep your shoulder blades back, bend your legs behind you, and flex your core. Then pull yourself up until your collarbone is at the same height as the bar. Afterwards lower yourself down and pull yourself up again. Try to do three sets until failure.

4. Plate Twists.

Plate twists are a great way to get definition. To do them sit on a floor and keep your legs in front of you and grab a small weight plate. Then cross your knees and keep your ankles elevated off of the floor. Afterwards rotate your torso from one side of your body to the other twisting so that your body can fully stretch. Use slow and deliberate motions in order to prevent injury and do between 12 and 15 reps per set. 

5. Medicine Ball Toss.

The medicine ball toss uses explosive motions to help strengthen the core. While it is best to have a partner for this activity it isnt necessary. To do the exercise squat down and hold the ball between your legs. Then rise up while lifting the ball as high as you can above your head and toss it behind you to your partner. If you dont have a partner do the exercise against a wall so that it is easy to retrieve your medicine ball. Do this exercise for as many reps as you can.

6. Side Bridges.

Like planks, side bridges are a simple workout that can be difficult to master. Lie on your side and elevate your body using your feet and forearms. Hold this position until failure and then repeat it with the other side of your body. You should try and make each rep last for roughly one minute, although less experienced individuals may only be able to support themselves for a few seconds.

7. Jack Knives.

Jack knives are great for getting a thorough ab workout. To do them lie on the ground and extend your arms behind your head. Then slowly bring your arms and legs up so that they meet each other at a 45-degree angle. Then slowly lower your body back down to the starting position and begin the motion again. Try and do between 20 and 30 reps per set.

8. Stomach Vacuum.

Doing stomach vacuums is a great way to really work your ab muscles and fortify your core. This exercise is also incredibly simple and can be done almost anywhere. To do the Stomach Vacuum simply stand straight up and put your hands on your waist. Then breath out. After that expand your chest as much as possible and then bring your stomach in as far as you can then hold this position. Try and hold each rep for anywhere between 30 seconds and a minute depending on your skill level.

9. Wind Sprints.

Wind sprints are an exercise that many people have probably heard of, but might not know a lot about. To successfully do wind sprints hang from a pullup bar and keep your arms and legs extended. Then raise one knee as high as possible. After that lower your knee while raising the other. Repeat this process for the rest of your set. If you are doing wind sprints correctly, you should be moving your legs as if you were actually running.

10. Ab Roller

Using an ab roller can really help to improve your six pack. The device is specifically designed to sculpt your core and strengthen your muscles. To use it keep your hands on the unit and your knees on the floor. Slowly roll forward and stretch your body as far and as straight as you possibly can. Inhale as you do so. Once you are fully extended hold the position for a few seconds and then begin to retract it. When you get back to the starting point repeat the process. Try and do at least 25 reps per set.

While you may have spent a lot of time working on your goals for the next year, there are plenty of things that are going to get in your way to achieving them.

Before we go any further lets establish the use of language here. Goals can be substituted with objectives, targets, outcomes, achievements, resolutions, aims, ambitions and any others you can think of. For the purpose of this report, the writer will use Goal.

How often have you started off the year, or next phase of your development with good intentions, and some goals of what you want to achieve, only to find that somehow you never see to achieve them? What I will cover in this article is the 9 biggest obstacles that will get in your way. I will take each one in turn and explore what is behind it, why it is there, and more importantly the action you can take to put it to one side.

What I will also do is evidence this be using the responses of a survey conducted with Sole Traders, and owners of Small and medium Enterprises (SMEs), identifying the challenges they face in the coming year.

Although there are arguably hundreds of potential obstacles, 9 appear most commonly.

1. Lack of information
2. Lack of skill
3. Limiting beliefs
4. Well being
5. Other people
6. Own motivation
7. Time
8. Money
9. Fear

Why have a Goal?
If you needed more reason do set your own goals, in a study conducted on students in the 1979 Harvard MBA program , only three percent of the graduates had written goals and plans; 13 percent had goals, but they were not in writing; and 84 percent had set no goals at all.

Ten years later, the findings revealed that 13 percent of the class who had goals were earning up to 84 percent compared to those who had not set any. For the three percent who defined their goals and wrote them down, they were earning on average, ten times as much as the other 97 percent put together.

They don't know how to set goals. Some set goals that are too general. These are, in reality, fantasies common to everyone. Goals, on the other hand, are clear, written, specific, and measurable.

They fear failure. Failure hurts, but it is often necessary to experience failure in order to achieve the greatest success. Do not unconsciously sabotage yourself by not setting any goals in which you might fail.

They fear rejection. People are often afraid that if they are unsuccessful at achieving a goal, others will be critical of them. This is remedied by keeping your goals to yourself at the outset; let others see your results and achievements once you've accomplished your goals.

What is a Goal?
Other names that are used, explore others use of language. Why do we have them? Different types of goal towards/ away from.
Some goals are called away from goals. These are usually framed in the negative. Here are a few examples.

I dont want to smoke anymore
I dont want to be unfit
I dont want to be overweight
I dont want to be broke

Now lets reframe them in the positive
I am a non smoker
I am fit and healthy
I am at my ideal weight
I can cover my bills

Notice the difference. They are stated in the positive and take on the assumption that you have achieved it already. By assuming as if your behaviour changes so that you are acting like to have already achieved what you wanted to do. What a great feeling to have even before you have got there. It also bolsters your motivation.

So now we have determined if our goal is towards something, or away from something. We have now stated it in the positive. This however is still not a very well detailed goal. We will now look at how we can make it more specific.

An ideal goal should be expressed in the positive, be time bound and specific. You may also like to consider, how will you know when you have achieved it, what will it feel like, what will the people around you be like? What will you do to celebrate it?

A goal must be time bound. When do I want to have achieved it? If thats when I want to achieve it, then when must I start? What is the first step I need to take? Who should I tell? Should telling that person be the first step? What skills or knowledge do I need to acquire along the way?

Goal size, is the goal too big to achieve? If so then breaking it down into smaller bite sized pieces may be the right approach.

How serious are you about this goal. On a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being low and 10 being high), how committed are you to this goal? If your answer is less that 7 you are unlikely to follow it up completely. What would you need to do to this goal to move it from a 7 to an 8?

Now that you have really defined your goal you are ready to go. Arent you? So whats stopping you?

I will take each one of the potential obstacles in turn, and elaborate.

Lack of Information
Information can have one of two effects. With too much you can be overwhelmed, and can stop you from making a decision or taking the next steps. With too little information you are not able to put things into perspective, or look at the bigger picture. Identifying where you have gaps in your knowledge, and including this as part of your goal will move you closer to achieving it. There are several ways to obtain new information. Research, planned reading, listening to CDs, DVDs on a specific topic or networking with individuals who have the knowledge to share with you.

Lack of Skill
In order to move forwards you may have to pick up skills along the way. This need not be an enormous challenge. As part of your goal setting, understanding what skills you need to acquire, and how you will acquire them will form steps of your plan. This does not necessarily mean that you need to enrol on a course, although that is a great idea. Other alternatives such as on-line study, planned reading, shadowing a colleague in the workplace, or seeking advice from a friend can also help you obtain the skills you need.

Limiting beliefs
We all have a set of beliefs by which we live our lives. These are set in our subconscious at an early age. Sometimes these beliefs can hold you back and limit your ability to achieve you goals. Some common examples may be familiar to you. Indecision or Procrastination- should I do one thing or another? This often results in you doing nothing. The limiting belief manifests itself as I am not able to make decisions.

Unable to make progress or stuck when a way of working is no longer effective, you continue to use it and often forms a comfort zone, the limiting belief here could be I cant/ wont change. Often people will state that I dont deserve to be successful, or that shouldnt work for me. Here we are seeing self sabotage and not valuing themselves and their own ability. These are only a few examples, but listen out for them and notice how many times you hear yourself saying things like this.

Well being
Despite your best efforts, there may be times when you are simply not able to pursue your goals. A sudden illness or injury can put set you back. When this happens you need to be realistic.

Beating yourself up will not help, nor simply giving up. Take a little time to re assess your goal and consider what your options are now. How important is it that this goal is achieved within the original timeframe. Also consider how else you goal can be pursued, and who can help you during these times.

Quite often the people that are closest to us fear us achieving our goals. For them this means that you may change and that will also mean change for them. They may not be aware how important your goals are to you.

If the people you share your time with for example family, friends, colleagues to not understand and support your goals, there is a chance that you may be influenced by this. If these people are adverse to change then they may well sabotage you plans.

Own Motivation
Although you may see out with the best intentions, after a while the novelty may wear off or there are other distractions. This may be down to a number of factors. Perhaps the goals that you set were too large, and needed to be broken down into smaller manageable chunks.

Perhaps you are not getting the results, and need to consider what you doing that is are preventing you from moving forward. After continued effort you may feel that the goal is now actually something that do dont want, or at least the outcome.

In this case the goal needs to be reassessed. If it requires modification because circumstances have changed, then change it. If it no longer serves you, then dont waste your energy following up on something just because you started it.

Time
We all live in a world where we dont seem to have enough time. Many of us are time poor, which means that we do not manage our use of time to get the best results. Quite often I hear from the people around me I just dont have time to do x. How true is this statement really? Have we taken on too much, overcommitted ourselves and are embarrassed to say no? Perhaps, but I have another view.

If we approach our use of time without any structure we may just leap from one thing to another in no particular order. Without priority we will move from one thing to the next urgent thing.

There is also the aspect of distractions. This can be distraction from others who do not have the same aspirations as you. There is the distraction of telephone calls and emails. Quite often we busy ourselves with those things that are nice to do, but do not take us any further forward to achieving our goals.

Money
Money is a common reason for not pursuing your goal. Usually it is the lack of money that stops you. When you hear someone say I cant afford it or I just dont have the money. These statements are usually offered up without much hesitation.

While I agree that it may well be true to some extent, what alternatives have they really explored and how else could the money be found? If you are really serious about achieving this goal, what lengths would you go to in order to find the money (legally)!

Lets turn this around and look at it from another perspective. What is it costing you to not have that goal in your life right now? For example being in that bad relationship or enduring bad health. If in achieving this goal it was going to get you that next job, or mean that you would get that 10% performance bonus at work, what efforts would you go to?

Fear
What do I mean by fear? There are the more straightforward examples. If you need to do something that takes you right outside of your comfort zone for the first time, which may well install fear into you.

Then there is the fear of failure. What will those around you think if you dont achieve you goal. How will you face them and maintain your integrity. Better to quit now that to see it through right? That way no-one will be able to judge me.
Another type of fear is the fear of success. What if I actually do it, and people find out I am a fraud? Is this goal something that I really want anyway? Self doubt comes into play and you try to talk your self out of it.

What evidence supports this in a business context?
In a recent survey conducted with Small and Medium enterprises (SMEs) and sole Traders they were asked what they viewed as the biggest challenges facing them in 2010. All of those surveyed reported that they were partially successful in achieving their goals and objectives in 2009. 33% of these goals were significant, and the reasons for not achieving them were down to ill health, not asking for help, and lack of confidence in the economy amongst others.

Many of these goals were being carried on into the following year, some people carrying forward all of their goals. When asked what they were going to do in order to achieve those, 66% reported that they would try something different, and 33% would look for assistance.

So what is stopping these business people from moving forwards? Well from the sample surveyed the leading factors were Lack of skills, lack of knowledge, Health, Fear (of success/ failure) and Limiting beliefs.

Those that responded that they would look for assistance; it was equally split between others in their trade or profession, approaching a business coach, or contacting specialist suppliers. From those three options, certainly looking at what your competitors are doing may give you some clues. After all if someone in our sector is being successful look at what they are doing. Likewise specialist suppliers may be useful if the understand you goals and aspirations. However they may have another agenda, after all they are in business too.

However neither of these two approaches are focussed on helping you achieve your goals, and neither of them hold you accountable in working towards them. This is where a Business coach can prove particularly valuable. They will assist you in defining and developing you goals, identify what is stopping you and develop strategies to help you deal with those obstacles when they come along.

The Business coach will also challenge you to check if you are working on goals that move you towards what you want, and keep you accountable to those goals. As a Sole Trader or SME often there is no one around with whom you can share your goals with, and discuss them.

One of the common objections to using a Business coach is the perceived cost, often saying I cant afford that or its too expensive. It is sometimes useful to look at this from another perspective. What is it costing you not to use a Business coach? If you can attach a value to achieving each goal then the services of an effective Business coach can be quickly calculated.

Lets go back to the survey respondents for a moment. Two of the challenges identified were lack of skills, and lack of knowledge. Suppose for a moment if a Business coach could help you identify what these gaps were, how to close them and then how to apply them to your Business what would that be worth? You may think that you can go it alone, but consider for a moment how would you clearly identify those gaps in skills or knowledge? How long would it take you? Which direction would you go?
